BaselConnect’s Language Café aims to connect foreigners living in Basel with locals in order to allow the foreigners to practice conversing in High German and even Schwyzerdytsch and the locals to have an opportunity to connect with foreign native speakers and practice their language skills (e.g. English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc.)
Our Language Café is based on the principle of reciprocity and is an all-volunteer effort with no charge. We usually meet every other Monday evening from 19.00 – 21.00 in the KAFFEEHAUS @ unternehmen mitte. The first hour is devoted to conversation in small groups of five or six in High German and the second hour to conversation in other languages, led by native speakers.
The only rule is that everyone must speak only in the target language. If people have trouble expressing themselves, others can help them. This is to prevent everyone defaulting to English as lingua franca, which would defeat the purpose.
