English Seminar Choir (ESC) June 2018 Concerts: ‘Siglo de Oro/The Golden Age’
Two worlds meet in our concert: the first is the world of the Elizabethan madrigals of England, the second the Villancicos of the Spanish Siglo de Oro. On the Spanish side, we find a conservative society that is proud to assert its roots through their songs; England, on the other hand, is constantly changing, and in her insular manner develops the art of madrigals imported from Italy into an independent style. In Spain, the guitar, the most played instrument in the World since then, is being developed. In England, composers such as John Dowland and Thomas Morley lay the stylistic foundations of the English vocal tradition that still prevails today.
