Basler Bach-Chor presents their latest work from the Handel series, the most famous oratorio “Messiah”. It continues to fascinate the public and, with its magnificent choirs and its overwhelming wealth of musical colors, provides an intense musical experience.
Handel wrote the Messiah in the incredibly short time from 22 August to 14 September 1741. However, this timeframe was typical. He composed several operas and oratorios each year for the opera season.
The first performance was conducted by Handel personally on April 13, 1742 in the New Music Hall in Dublin. Even the dress rehearsal was such an overwhelming success that the organizers asked the women to attend without hoop skirts and the gentlemen to leave their swords elsewhere, so that more people could find a place in the 600-seat concert hall. The Messiah became Handel’s most performed oratorio, with him personally supervising 36 performances.
